Camera Trapping
Camera trappings are used to identify animals inhabiting both Simeulue and Bangkaru. This provides an overview of what lives in the forests and this information can be used by volunteers to monitor population increases or decreases over time.
On bangkaru, camera traps are used to monitor lizard poaching activity on freshly laid turtle nests. After a turtle nest is laid, there is a critical period of around a week when lizards are able to smell, find and eat them the eggs. By monitoring nests with camera traps, decisions can be made about how best to protect them.
Camera traps are an exciting way to collect data, as you are always left in anticipation as to what might have been captured over its period of use.
