Our conservation initiatives focus on stabilizing endangered sea turtle populations and biodiversity research on Bangkaru. Through working with the community and working with dedicated rangers, Ecosystem Impact Foundation, HAkA and BKSDA have been able to create an effective anti-poaching project.
Before setting up the programme, poachers visited Bangkaru Island’s beaches every night, harvesting all turtle eggs from the freshly laid nests. This equated too as many as 1,500 eggs a night, threatening the existence of the green and leatherback sea turtles, which are already on the IUCN's Red List.
Since setting up the ranger programme, and patrolling Bangkaru’s beach’s every morning and night, we have been able to reduce this number to zero. It was not an easy feat, and the rangers were met with hostility at first. But, gradually through educating and gaining the trust and respect of the local community, we have been able to achieve our goal of stopping poaching on Bangkaru.
